Frequently asked questions

How does the UX Methods Tree work?

You make two choices: what you're working on (research, design, testing or analytics), then the method that matches your situation. You get an approach, the steps to run it, what it takes in time and people, tools to use, and further reading.

Which UX method should I start with?

If you're not yet sure who your users are or what they need, start with interviews. Five to eight conversations usually surface the main patterns, and every other method works better once you have them.

What's the difference between usability testing and A/B testing?

Usability testing shows why people struggle, using a handful of participants. A/B testing shows which of two versions performs better, and needs enough traffic to reach statistical significance. Use the first to find problems and the second to choose between fixes.

How many users do I need for a usability test?

About five per round finds most of the major problems in a flow. Several small rounds with fixes in between teach you more than one large study.

Is the tool free?

Yes. No signup, and you can save any method card as a PDF or PNG. When you're ready to put a method to work, Experience Builder gives your team a place to run it.
