How to pick a business idea that works

A list of ideas is the easy part. What separates the ideas that turn into businesses from the ones that turn into a domain name is whether someone pays before you've built much. Here's how to narrow the list down.

01

Start with what you already have

Look at what you can already do, the people you already know and the gear already in your garage. A skill you've used at work for five years is worth more than a trend you read about last week. Use the "What you're good at" filter above. The ideas that match your skills will be the cheapest to start.

02

Pick a budget you can lose

Most first businesses should start under $500. Services like bookkeeping for freelancers, Google Business Profile setup or dog walking need almost nothing but time. Hold off on ideas that need inventory, a vehicle or a lease, like a food truck or a vending route, until a cheaper version has proven people want what you sell.

03

Sell it before you build it

Every idea above comes with a test to run this week, such as a preorder page, a sample delivered to ten potential customers or one paid pilot. The goal is a payment or a firm commitment, not compliments. Friends saying "I'd totally buy that" is the weakest signal there is. For more ways to test an idea, try our validation methods tool.

04

Choose the one that gets a yes

Run tests for two or three ideas from your shortlist, and keep the one where strangers paid. If none of them got a yes, that's useful too. You spent a week finding out instead of a year.

Frequently asked questions

What's a good business idea for a beginner?

A service you can already perform, sold to people you can already reach. Services need little money, give you feedback within days, and teach you selling, pricing and delivery, which every later business needs. Filter for "Under $500" and "Days" above to see them.

How much money do I need to start a business?

For most service businesses, under $500: a website, business cards and the tools you probably own. Product businesses usually need $500 to $5,000 for materials and inventory. Anything with a vehicle, equipment or a lease runs higher. Each idea above shows its rough budget and what the money goes toward.

How do I know if my business idea is good?

Ask someone to pay for it. A preorder, a deposit or a paid pilot tells you more than any survey or business plan. Every idea in this generator includes one specific test to try this week.

How much can I earn from these ideas?

Each card shows a rough range for one person working solo, in the unit that business usually charges: per hour, per job or per month. They're US estimates, and your prices will depend on your market, your experience and how many hours you put in. Treat them as a starting point to check against what local competitors charge, not a promise.

What business can I start while working full time?

Pick "Evenings & weekends" above. Freelance services, online products, weekend markets and seasonal services like holiday light installation all fit around a job. Avoid anything that needs you during business hours until it pays enough to replace them.

Does this work as a company idea generator for a startup?

Partly. Most ideas here are small businesses one or two people can start without investors, because that's where most people begin. If you want to build a company that grows into a team or raises money, start with the Software and Services for businesses ideas: the problems they solve are the ones companies get built on. The rule is the same at any size, though: get a paid pilot before you build. For bigger decisions, our entrepreneur decision tree walks through what to settle first.

Can this make a business plan for my idea?

Click "Plan it" on any idea. Answer a few questions about your customer, how you'll reach them, your price, your income goal and your hours, and you get a one-page launch plan: how many sales a month you need, whether your hours cover it, a week-by-week first month and a clear rule for when to keep going. It's deliberately shorter than a traditional business plan. The goal is a paying customer, not a 30-page document.

Do I need a license?

Sometimes. Food, childcare, pet food, guiding, drone work, notary work and property management are commonly regulated. Ideas with known rules carry a note on their card. Check with your city or county before taking money.

Is there a business idea quiz?

Yes. Take the 60-second quiz: six quick questions about your budget, where you want to work, your time, how soon you need a paying customer, your skills and your interests. The generator then shows the ideas that fit, best matches first, and you can keep adjusting the filters from there.

Can it give me a random business idea?

Click "Deal me an idea" at the top or "Random idea" in the filters. It picks at random from the ideas that match your current filters, so you get a random business idea that still fits your budget, time and skills. Click again for another.

Is this tool free?

Yes. No signup, no email required. Use the star on any card to build a shortlist, and download it as an image or PDF to keep.
